Submodule 6: Microbes and Fungi -- the Pathogens

Methods of Control

Once invasive microbes have entered the country, pesticides are a key method of control. Since many of the organisms are vector-borne, controlling the vector can help control the infestation.

Several control methods were mentioned above. Below is a summary:

  • Destroy infected organisms
  • Isolate organisms that are not yet infected
  • Establish and follow strict measures to curb spread of the pathogen including surveillance measures and disinfection of clothing and equipment.
  • Restrict travel between infected and non-infected areas
  • Research into control methods, including genetic engineering
  • Breeding for resistance
