Submodule 6: Microbes and Fungi -- the Pathogens

Methods of Control

Once invasive microbes have entered the country, pesticides are a key method of control. Since many of the organisms are vector-borne, controlling the vector can help control the infestation.

Several control methods were mentioned above. Below is a summary:

Destroy infected organisms
Isolate organisms that are not yet infected
Establish and follow strict measures to curb spread of the pathogen including surveillance measures and disinfection of clothing and equipment.
Restrict travel between infected and non-infected areas
Research into control methods, including genetic engineering
Breeding for resistance
