Submodule 6: Microbes and Fungi -- the Pathogens
Methods of Control
Once invasive microbes have entered the country, pesticides are a key method of control. Since many of the organisms are vector-borne, controlling the vector can help control the infestation.
Several control methods were mentioned above. Below is a summary:
- Destroy infected organisms
- Isolate organisms that are not yet infected
- Establish and follow strict measures to curb spread of the pathogen including surveillance measures and disinfection of clothing and equipment.
- Restrict travel between infected and non-infected areas
- Research into control methods, including genetic engineering
- Breeding for resistance
